BLEPHAROPLASTY (EYELID LIFT)

INDICATIONS: Sagging skin of the upper and lower eyelids, as well as puffiness and bags of the eyelids. This can be the result of heredity, aging, and environmental exposure. Occasionally patients may have obstruction of their visual fields and chronic irritation of the eyelids. If this is confirmed by an eye specialist, and visual field obstruction studies indicat such, the upper eyelid surgery is sometimes covered by health insurance.
The eyes are most important facial feature. Heavy eyelid skin, puffiness, and bags can make a patient look prematurely old, as well as tired.
SURGERY: Most patients elect to have both their upper and lower eyelid surgery performed at the same time. Occasionally, patients chose only the upper or lower eyelids to treat. The combination surgery takes approximately 1.5 hours. Some anesthesia is required. This is performed on an outpatient basis. Incisions are made in the natural crease of the upper eyelid and just beneath the lash line of the lower eyelids. This conceals the incisions. Excess skin is removed, fat pockets that cause puffiness and bags are removed, and the skin and muscle of the eyelids is tightened. Most sutures used are dissolvable, a few need removal.
POST OPERATIVE: Patients go home after the procedure, unless additional procedures are being performed where an overnight stay is recommended. Applying ice for the next 4-5 days helps to reduce swelling and bruising. We recommend use of frozen peas or frozen corn, and this can be applied to the eyelids with little pressure. Bruising and swelling are generally minimal. Most patients can return to work in 7-10 days. Exercise is not permitted for 3-4 weeks following the procedure, unless otherwise advised by our office.
