INDICATIONS: Liposuction is the removal of fat in areas that are bothersome, and resistant to diet and exercise. Patients do not need to be at their ideal body weight to be candidates for liposuction, but it is not a substitute for diet and exercise. The procedure is meant to sculpt various areas of the body. It can be safely performed along with other surgical procedures. The most common sites in men are the abdomen, hip folds (love handles), and chest. The most common sites in women are the abdomen, hipfolds (love handles), back folds, thighs, hips, and submental (neck) regions.
SURGICAL PROCEDURE: The most common technique used today is called tumescent liposuction. This can be perfomed with little sedation, or a general anesthetic. A special solution of saline is infiltrated in the regions of fat to be suctioned. This helps to reduce bruising and discomfort after the surgery. The result is permanent if diet and exercise remain the same as before the procedure.
Besides the golden standard of tumescent liposuction, there are some newer techniques evolving, that include lasers and ultrasonic waves. Unfortunately, these techniques have not been proven to be more effective than tumescent liposuction, and they can be riskier. Surgeon experience is the most important factor.
POST OPERATIVE: Mild pain medication is given for post operative discomfort. Ther is a bruised sensation. Patients will wear a compression garment over the area treated for several weeks to help reduce swelling, and tighten the skin. Showering is permitted the day after surgery. Patients can also return to work 48 hours after the procedure, and moderate exercise is permitted 2 weeks after surgery. Results will be seen within several weeks, but the final result can take months.
