MASTOPEXY (BREAST LIFT)

INDICATIONS: A Breast Lift (mastopexy) is indicated in patients who present with sagging (ptotic) or drooping breasts. This can be the result from abnormal growth of the breast, after pregnancy and breast feeding, or after weight loss. Gravitational pull from aging is one of the most common causes. Patients requesting mastopexy are looking for an uplift, with return of the nipple complex to a more youthful position, and tightening of the breast skin. Many patients are also looking for greater fullness in the superior bustline.
SURGERY: The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, and it can be performed in conjuction with other plastic surgery procedures. There are three main approaches: periareolar(around the nipple complex), vertical (lollipop incision), and the traditional inverted T incision. The approach depends upon the degree of sagging, and whether or not breast implants are used in the procedure. Patients can decide whether they would like to have their breasts a little smaller, the same size, or larger. The approach is discussed and chosen with the surgeon’s recommendations. It is very common to place breast implants at the time of surgery unless the patient would like to be a little smaller after surgery.
POST OPERATIVE COURSE: Mild pain medication is required after surgery. If breast implants are placed, a muscle relaxant is also prescribed for a week. The breasts may also be taped in position after the surgery for a week. Patients are fitted with comfortable post surgical bras for several weeks. At least one week off from work or school is recommended, and exercise is not permitted for 3-4 weeks after the procedure. Most stitches will dissolve. It can take weeks to months for the final result, depending on the severity of the breast drooping, and whether or not breast implants are utilized.
